Key Ingredients for Turkey Sweet Potato Chili

Turkey Sweet Potato Chili is not just another bowl of stew; it’s a warm, hearty dish that nourishes the body and soul. The sweet blend of flavors makes it an ideal cozy meal for any evening. Let’s dive into the key ingredients that bring this chili to life.

  • Ground Turkey: I prefer lean ground turkey for its mild flavor and lower fat content compared to traditional beef. It absorbs spices well and complements the sweetness of the sweet potatoes beautifully.

  • Sweet Potatoes: These golden tubers add a touch of sweetness and creaminess to the chili. When diced and cooked, they meld perfectly with the other ingredients, creating a comforting texture.

  • Beans: I usually opt for black beans and kidney beans. Not only do they enhance the chili’s protein content, but they also offer a lovely contrast in texture and flavor.

  • Tomato Products: Canned diced tomatoes and tomato paste are essential for creating the rich, savory base. They lend acidity that harmonizes with the sweetness of the sweet potatoes.

  • Spices: A robust mix of chili powder, cumin, and smoked paprika adds depth and warmth. These spices infuse the chili with a batch of bold flavors that keep you coming back for seconds.

  • Onion and Garlic: Sautéed together, they form the aromatic foundation of the dish, filling your kitchen with enticing scents.

Each ingredient plays a vital role, ensuring your Turkey Sweet Potato Chili is not only delicious but also nourishing and satisfying.

This dish brings together the heartiness of turkey and sweet potatoes, making it a go-to for chilly evenings. Let’s explore some essential tips to ensure your chili turns out delicious every time.

Choosing the Right Ground Turkey

Opt for lean ground turkey (about 93% lean) to keep your dish healthier without sacrificing flavor. If you have time, try using a mix of dark and light turkey meat for an even richer taste.

Fresh vs. Frozen Sweet Potatoes

While fresh sweet potatoes are always preferred for their sweet, earthy flavor, frozen cubes can save you time if you’re in a pinch. Just be sure to adjust your cooking times accordingly, as they may take slightly longer to soften.

Spice It Up!

Don’t hesitate to customize your spice blend. A pinch of smoked paprika or a dash of cayenne pepper can elevate your Turkey Sweet Potato Chili to new levels of deliciousness.

Simmer for Flavor

Giving your chili time to simmer longer enhances the flavor, allowing the ingredients to meld beautifully together. Aim for at least 30-45 minutes, but feel free to let it go even longer on low heat.

Leftovers Are Your Friend

This chili tastes even better the next day as the flavors continue to develop, making it perfect for meal prep. Store it in an airtight container in the fridge and enjoy the leftovers throughout the week!

Description

A hearty and flavorful chili made with lean ground turkey and sweet potatoes, perfect for a cozy meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 T olive oil, divided
  • 1 1/2 lbs. lean ground turkey
  • 2 green peppers, seeds and stem removed and chopped
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 T minced garlic
  • 1 T Spike Seasoning (optional, but recommended; see notes)
  • 1 T chili powder
  • 1 tsp. ground Ancho Chiles (or use more regular chili powder if you don’t have Ancho)
  • 1 T ground cumin
  • two 4 oz. cans diced green chiles (Anaheim chiles, not jalapenos)
  • one 14 oz. can petite diced tomatoes
  • one 8 oz. can tomato sauce
  • two 14 ounce cans beef broth (see notes)
  • 1 large sweet potato, diced into cubes (see notes)
  • 1 T Green Tabasco Sauce (or more, to taste)
  • salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 T olive oil in a heavy frying pan, add ground turkey, and cook over medium-high heat until the turkey is well-browned and all liquid has evaporated. (I like to break it apart with an old-fashioned potato masher as the meat cooks.)
  2. Put the browned turkey into a medium-sized soup pot.
  3. Add the other T of olive oil to the frying pan, add the chopped green pepper and chopped onion, and sauté about 3-4 minutes over medium heat.
  4. Add the minced garlic, Spike Seasoning if using, chili powder, Ancho chile powder, and ground cumin and cook 1-2 minutes.
  5. Add the pepper-onion-spices mixture to the soup pot.
  6. Then add the diced green chiles with juice, petite diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and beef broth to the soup pot and start to simmer the chili on low.
  7. While the chili simmers, peel the sweet potatoes and dice into pieces about 3/4 – 1 inches square.
  8. Add sweet potatoes to the chili and simmer about an hour, adding a little water if it gets too thick.
  9. Taste for seasoning and add Green Tabasco Sauce, salt, and fresh ground pepper to taste.
  10. Serve Turkey Sweet Potato Chili hot, with optional sour cream and cheese to add at the table if desired.
  11. This will keep in the fridge for at least 4-5 days or can be frozen.

Notes

  • Spike Seasoning adds great flavor but is optional.
  • Beef broth can be adjusted based on desired thickness of chili.
  • Sweet potatoes can be peeled or cooked with skin depending on preference.
