Description

A delicious tart featuring caramelized onions encased in puff pastry.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 2 large onions, (thickly sliced into rounds)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or ½ tsp dried)
  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Melt the butter in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add the onion slices and cook for about 10 minutes, letting them soften and release moisture.
  4. Sprinkle with sugar, salt, and pepper, then continue cooking for another 5 minutes, gently turning, until golden and caramelized.
  5. Turn off the heat. Sprinkle the onions with garlic and thyme, and drizzle with balsamic vinegar if using.
  6. Lightly grease the skillet edges with olive oil.
  7. Lay the puff pastry over the onions, tucking the edges down around the sides like you’re wrapping them in a blanket.
  8. Bake for 20–22 minutes, until the pastry is puffed, deeply golden, and irresistible-looking.
  9. Let the tart rest for 5 minutes, then carefully invert onto a serving plate.
  10. Slice and serve warm.
